Hantam Hike

“The Karoo is not so much a place as it is a feeling. It enters through the skin, taking its time to unfold in your bloodstream and when it is time to leave, you realize it has taken hold of your soul.”

Join us for a slack packing experience with a difference! Meet and mingle with our Northern-Cape sheep farmers and their families whilst unknowingly contributing to maize and fodder to farmers in this drought stricken area.

The premise of the Hantam Hike is to assist Farmers in this area where they have had little to no rain over the past 7 years. The Northern Cape is known for its Merino farming but over the past 7 years, most of them reverted to the more hardened Dorper sheep, and some of the farmers were sadly forced to leave their farms. With the Hantam hike we are hoping that we can provide an additional income, even though it is only once a year! Simultaneously this outing offers hikers the unique opportunity to meet the farmers, learn about their challenges but also to experience Northern Cape hospitality and cuisine that only these Farmers and their families can offer. Apart from the meals they provide in exchange for cash, we make sure that we “pay” for our accommodation by buying fodder including maize from the local Cooperation in Calvinia. Each farmer benefits equally and no money changes hands.
