“The Karoo is not so much a place as it is a feeling. It enters through the skin, taking its time to unfold in your bloodstream and when it is time to leave, you realize it has taken hold of your soul.”

Date: 14 – 19 May 2019

Day 1:  Tuesday, 14 May 17:00. We all arrive at Toekoms guest farm, 32 km South of Calvinia. Tonight we have a meet and great and first supper together in a farmhouse belonging to Ita van Niekerk, the only female farmer in the Hantam area, and in the Karoo as far as we know.

Day 2:  Wednesday, 15 May, 23 km. We depart by shuttle to Calvinia. Today we walk on the Loerisfontein road for about 15km before we turn right onto the Toren road. Tonight we sleep in tents or in the sheep shed at a place called “die Hoek” on Uncle Berties farm.  Very basic ablution facilities, wood, ice and a snack awaits you upon your arrival. Tonight one of the local farmer’s wives prepare a scrumptious meal for us on an open fire in the middle of the Karoo.

Day 2: Thursday 16 May, 20 Km. Today we have breakfast at 08:00 and depart for Groot Toren.  Here we have a choice of the “White house” accommodation belonging to Oom Bertie and Tannie Anna, or lovely up market accommodation belonging to the legendary Oom Burnett and his wife. Tonight we have a supper prepared by Tannie Renska whilst listening to Oom Burnetts stories about the area. Some of the history of the farm dates back as 1836.

Day 3: Friday 17 May, 22 Km. Today we walk in an easterly direction over a Marino farm and sleep in under the Thorn trees. We have access to basic ablution facilities and eat a scrumptious supper prepared by the local community.

Day 4: Saturday,18 May 17 km. Today is the most scenic route of the entire day. We follow a farm road for 11 km, then take the Vanrhynshoek road towards the farm of a local legend, Oom Basie. Tonight hikers can sleep in the newly renovated guest house or camp on the lawn in front of the guest house, depending on the number of hikers. For supper we take the shuttle up the road towards the main house, swimming pool where a scrumptious supper will be served by Ronel and her husband, Johan Nel.

Day 5: Sunday 19 May, 18 km. Today we follow the road from the guest house past the main house that gradually leads hikers up the notorious Hantam mountain. Once we summit it is another 3 km before we reach the point with the most spectacular view over Calvinia, the small little town on the southern foot of the mountain. Here we have some celebratory champagne and depart via shuttle to Toekoms guest farm where our cars await us!
